COOLPOLY® Thermally Conductive Plastics

Engineering plastics are typically good thermal insulators. While this attribute is beneficial in certain applications, it limits the utility of plastics in many heat-generating applications, causing hot spots and increasing device temperatures. Engineers are increasingly demanding material solutions that allow increased power output in smaller spaces, necessitating materials with thermal conductivity.

Imparting thermal conductivity to plastics changes the way a part responds to heat. Thermally conductive plastics manage thermal energy rather than merely surviving it. This property enables plastics to meet demanding engineering requirements more cost-effectively than metals, ceramics, and other materials. Thermal conductivity was a “missing property” from plastics.

Potential Benefits of Conductive Polymers:

Metal Replacement:

  • Weight reduction
  • Avoid metal manufacture and machining
  • Inherent corrosion resistance
  • Part consolidation opportunities

Electrical Management:

  • Improve safety
  • Increase reliability
  • Reduce amplification of electrical interference

Thermal Management:

  • Extend part and component life by reducing device temperature
  • Enable flexibility in material choice
  • Efficient heating and cooling
  • Eliminate the need for active cooling

Design Flexibility and Efficiency:

  • High throughput injection moulding
  • Manufacture of complex shapes and geometries
  • Rapid prototyping and evaluation

Product Series:

  • D-Series: Combines thermal conductivity with electrical isolation. Current commercial grades range from 1 – 10 W/mK.
  • E-Series: Combines thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. Current commercial grades range from 2 - 40 W/mK.
  • Elastomers: Available in D series. Current commercial grades range from 1 – 3 W/mK.
