Akulon®
Brand Information
Akulon® PA66 High-Performance Polyamide 66
Akulon® PA66 from Envalior is a high-performance polyamide 66 (PA66) engineering thermoplastic developed for applications requiring a combination of mechanical strength, stiffness, toughness, heat resistance and chemical resistance.
PA66 is widely used as an engineering plastic in demanding automotive, electrical and electronic, industrial and consumer applications. Compared with PA6, PA66 offers a higher melting point and faster crystallisation, making it particularly suitable for applications requiring higher short-term temperature resistance and fast processing cycles.
The Akulon® PA66 portfolio from Envalior covers a broad range of material solutions, including:
Unreinforced PA66
Glass-fibre reinforced PA66
High-modulus grades
Heat-stabilised PA66
Impact-modified grades
Flame-retardant PA66
Specialised grades for electrical, welding and food-contact applications
Why choose Akulon® PA66?
Polyamide 66 combines high mechanical performance with good resistance to heat, chemicals, wear and abrasion.
Key advantages of Akulon® PA66 include:
High strength and stiffness for structural and load-bearing components
Excellent short-term heat resistance
Good toughness and fatigue resistance
Good chemical resistance, including resistance to oils and water/glycol environments
Good wear and abrasion resistance
High dimensional stability with reinforced grades
Fast crystallisation, supporting efficient injection moulding
Flame-retardant solutions, including halogen-free solutions
Heat-stabilised grades for demanding temperature environments
Impact-modified grades for applications requiring enhanced toughness
Akulon® PA66 grades and material types
Akulon® PA66 is available in a broad range of formulations, allowing material properties to be tailored to the requirements of individual applications.
Unreinforced PA66
Unreinforced Akulon® PA66 grades provide a balance of processability, mechanical performance, ductility and cost. They are suitable for applications where high reinforcement levels or specialised performance are not required.
Glass-fibre reinforced PA66
Glass-fibre reinforced Akulon® PA66 grades provide increased stiffness, strength and dimensional stability. Different glass-fibre levels allow designers to select the appropriate balance between mechanical performance, weight, processing and cost.
High-modulus grades with higher glass-fibre content are available for applications requiring particularly high strength and stiffness.
Heat-stabilised PA66
Heat-stabilised Akulon® grades are designed for applications exposed to elevated temperatures over extended periods. Envalior uses different stabilisation systems to tailor PA66 performance for heat, UV, weathering and specific electrical or application requirements.
The Akulon® portfolio includes H2.0, H3.0 and XTS stabilisation technologies, with different stabilisation systems available for specific application needs.
Impact-modified PA66
Impact-modified Akulon® materials provide enhanced toughness for applications where resistance to mechanical shock and impact is important.
These grades complement the standard PA66 portfolio and enable designers to balance stiffness, strength and impact performance according to application requirements. The Envalior portfolio includes impact-modified materials across different reinforcement levels.
Flame-retardant Akulon® PA66
Akulon® includes a broad range of flame-retardant PA66 materials for electrical and electronic applications.
The portfolio includes both halogen-containing and halogen-free flame-retardant systems, with halogen-free technologies available using mineral, nitrogen, nitrogen/phosphorus and phosphorus-based systems.
Selected Akulon® PA66 grades are designed for applications requiring demanding flammability performance and electrical properties. For example, Akulon® AKV30FN00 is used in a micro USB plug application and provides UL94 V-0 at 0.4 mm together with excellent electrical tracking resistance.
Akulon® also includes halogen-free flame-retardant solutions for low-voltage applications, such as AKV30FN22 with 30% glass-fibre reinforcement.
Akulon® PA66 for electrical and electronic applications
PA66 is widely used in electrical and electronic components because it combines mechanical strength, thermal performance and electrical functionality.
Akulon® PA66 solutions are available for applications such as:
Electrical connectors
Plugs and housings
Circuit protection components
Terminal components
High-voltage connectors
Electrical and electronic housings
Components requiring flame retardancy
Components requiring high tracking resistance
Flame-retardant Akulon® grades can combine high mechanical performance with demanding electrical requirements, including high CTI performance in selected formulations.
Akulon® PA66 for automotive applications
Akulon® PA66 is particularly well suited to automotive applications where components must withstand mechanical loads, elevated temperatures and exposure to automotive fluids.
Its combination of heat resistance, toughness, fatigue resistance and chemical resistance makes it suitable for demanding automotive components, including applications exposed to oils, water/glycol mixtures and elevated temperatures.
Potential application areas include:
Under-the-bonnet components
Automotive electrical and electronic components
Connectors and housings
Fluid-handling components
Structural components
Components exposed to oils and water/glycol
E-mobility and electrical powertrain applications
Specialised Akulon® PA66 solutions
The Akulon® portfolio extends beyond standard engineering grades and includes materials developed for specialised application requirements.
These include:
Laser-weldable PA66 grades for joining plastic components
Food-contact PA66, including AKV30FC with 30% glass-fibre reinforcement
UV- and weathering-resistant grades
High-heat-resistance grades
Blow-moulding grades
Sustainable Akulon® PA66 solutions
Sustainable Akulon® solutions can be considered where customers are looking to reduce the fossil resource footprint of engineering plastic components while maintaining the required material performance, subject to individual grade specifications and qualification requirements.
